Dr Olwen Williams

Vice president for Wales

Dr Olwen Williams is the vice president for Wales at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and a member of the RCP Quality Improvement faculty.

She is a consultant physician in genitourinary/HIV medicine in north Wales, and in 2005, she received an OBE for services to medicine. Throughout her career, Olwen has striven to ensure vulnerable people have access to high-quality healthcare. Her interest in health inequalities means she has pioneered services for HIV patients, sexual assault referrals, prison sexual health and virtual outpatient clinics, and she has worked closely with the Welsh government, in particular advising them on the development of the Welsh sexual health strategy.

While chief of staff of the largest health board in Wales, she obtained an in-depth understanding of the complexities and challenges of delivering whole-system change across planned, unplanned and community care within the context of targets and financial constraints, and as clinical lead for one of the RCP Future Hospital development site projects, she supported the introduction of virtual clinics in remote and rural areas of north-west Wales.

She has previously been president of the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) and was most recently an elected member of the RCP Council. As a member of the RCP Joint Specialty Committee for Genitourinary Medicine (GUM), she co-wrote the specialty’s chapter for the Medical Care website.
