In July 2022 Dr Sarah Clarke was elected the 122nd president of the Royal College of Physicians. She will be only the fourth female president of the RCP.

She was previously clinical vice president of the RCP, past president of the British Cardiovascular Society and a Joint National Lead for Cardiology for the NHS’s Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) programme. She is currently a clinical director for strategic development at Royal Papworth Hospital and continues to act in an advisory capacity for the GIRFT programme on matters relating to cardiology.

Dr Clarke brings a wealth of relevant experience as a senior clinician, educator, leader of change and transformation within organisations and of clinical services, and a leader of quality improvement. She has established a wide network of influence nationally and internationally through her work with NHS England, Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT), the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research, the British Heart Foundation, the European Society of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology and the BMJ. In 2018 she was awarded the American College of Cardiology international service award.

Dr Clarke continues in clinical practice as an interventional cardiologist including participation on the on-call primary angioplasty rota at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.
