Professor Simon Bowman

RCP treasurer

Professor Simon Bowman took up the post of RCP treasurer on 1 April 2022, having been deputy treasurer for the previous five years and Harveian librarian from 2016-2020. As treasurer, he has oversight of finance and resource issues, chairs the Finance and Resources Board and other RCP committees, and has responsibility for other key aspects of RCP activity including estates and IT.

Simon graduated from University College London and UCLH, doing his initial clinical training in London and a PhD in immunology at UMDS at Guy’s Hospital. His senior registrar post was in Oxford and he then moved to Birmingham in 1996 whilst completing an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship. He remained in Birmingham as a senior lecturer/consultant rheumatologist. Since 2017, he has been a consultant rheumatologist and R&D director at Milton Keynes University Hospital.

Simon continues to work one day a week at University Hospitals Birmingham in the Sjogren’s Research Clinic that he established over 20 years ago. He is an honorary professor at the University of Birmingham in recognition of his continued research into Sjogren’s, focused on clinical assessment tools and clinical trial design. For many years Simon was medical president of the British Sjogren’s Syndrome Association, the UK patient charity for Sjogren’s.

Prior to his appointment as Harveian librarian, Simon was specialty representative on RCP Council 2014-2016 in his capacity as president of the British Society for Rheumatology.

During his career, Simon has held a number of other leadership roles including chair of South Birmingham Research Ethics Committee, as clinical director for specialty medicine and as the West Midlands representative on the NHS England Clinical Reference Group for specialised rheumatology.
