NHS induction, supervision and ePortfolio: guidance for international medical graduates

A structured induction and ongoing supervision are essential for a successful transition into NHS practice. Induction

Induction is a formal process to help adapt you to your roles and responsibilities as an NHS employee. There is usually a general hospital-wide induction and then a specific induction within your department/specialty. In many hospitals, there is also a specific induction for internationally qualified staff who are new to the NHS. Making the most of the ePortfolio

The ePortfolio is an electronic platform where doctors document their experience and learning, as well as any workplace-based assessments and supervision meetings. This is also where your annual review (appraisal) will be recorded. For doctors in training programmes, there will be annual requirements that need to be met to pass the appraisal process. There are several appraisal ePortfolio platforms available – you may be able to find out which one you will have access to at your interview or when you first meet your supervisor. Regular engagement with your ePortfolio from the moment you begin working in the NHS is highly recommended.
