Focus on physicians: 2018–19 census UK consultants – Provider level reporting

Produced by:

Focus on Physicians 2018–19 is the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow’s most recent census on the consultant physician and higher specialty trainee workforce in the UK.

Every year the RCP conducts a census of consultants and higher specialty trainees (HST) on behalf of all three UK royal colleges of physicians with the aim of providing robust data on the state of the medical workforce in the UK. In conjunction with other workforce surveys the census data helps us plan for the future.

We have summarised the following information for each region and each healthcare provider (where we have a sufficient data from the census responses):

  • Rota gaps
  • Hours worked
  • Job planning
  • Job satisfaction

In addition, we have included select information from our 2019 retirements survey and 2018 Wellbeing survey. These data are included in each regional report, and have also been included for the larger providers where we have sufficient responses.

Where information is presented at provider-level, we have included regional and national data for comparison.

If you wish to see or obtain more information from Focus on Physicians: the census of consultant physicians and higher specialty trainees, please visit the census site and download our data tools here:

Please note that if you are planning to use the census data toolkits for further or secondary analysis, we request that you contact the Medical Workforce Unit team for support and further advice. Thank you.
