Quality improvement for consultants

New Consultants Development

Enhance your confidence in leading Quality Improvement

Understanding and leading quality improvement (QI) is an important part of your role as a consultant. This one-day workshop from the Royal College of Physicians is designed to support you in applying QI methodology in practice and guiding trainees through their own quality improvement projects.

Whether you're new to QI or looking to build confidence in leading improvement work, this CPD-accredited session offers a practical and structured approach to quality improvement for consultants across all specialties.

The course will include QI techniques and/methodology, and enable consultants to  involve and support resident doctors in QI projects.

"I feel much more equipped to lead and encourage Involvement in QI of resident doctors now." - Helen Killen, Consultant Clinical Oncologist

What will I learn?

During this one-day quality improvement workshop, you will explore how to apply QI methodology in your consultant role and support residents undertaking quality improvement projects. You’ll consider the consultant’s role in leading and guiding QI work, reflect on how QI fits within the wider healthcare system, and discuss practical ways to embed improvement into everyday clinical practice. This workshop is designed to help you build confidence in quality improvement for consultants and contribute effectively to a culture of continuous improvement.

The workshop will enable learners to:

  • describe the nature and purpose of quality improvement
  • describe the essential knowledge and skills for quality improvement, and how to apply theory to practice
  • identify key models and tools for improvement in the NHS
  • consider how to undertake small tests of change and how to measure change as part of a QI project
  • lead and support resident doctors and teams to develop basic knowledge and skills to improve the quality of patient care.

This workshop is approved for 6 external CPD credits.

  • consultants of all specialties
  • senior leaders.
