SAS forum: Developing your SAS career
This forum is being hosted as part of SAS week 2026.
Join colleagues from across the UK for our second SAS forum of 2026, designed to help you explore career development opportunities, share experiences and connect with peers in an open, supportive environment.
Professor Jamie Read, Dean of Lincoln Medical School, will reflect on his own career journey and share how he built an academic and leadership portfolio alongside his clinical work.
You'll also hear from Dr Liz Estabrook about her experience and decision to pursue CESR, while RCP deputy registrar and portfolio assessor Dr Ben Chadwick will offer insider tips for preparing a strong portfolio pathway application.
The forum will conclude with an interactive workshop from the RCP education team, helping you develop the skills and confidence to advocate for yourself and navigate key career conversations; and an open discussion which aims to explore your experiences as an SAS doctor and help identify what recognition looks like to you.
Attendees can gain up to 2 non-clinical CPD for this session.

Professor Jamie Read FRCP
Professor Jamie Read is Dean of the Lincoln Medical School and Professor of Medical Education at the University of Lincoln. He is a SAS doctor in geriatric medicine at United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust where he also serves as a non-executive director. Jamie is a previous SAS Lead for the RCP and in 2024 became the first SAS Dean of a UK Medical School. Jamie remains passionate about promoting careers for colleagues in SAS roles, including appointing a number of SAS colleagues to senior positions within the Lincoln Medical School. He continues to lobby for parity of esteem and opportunity for colleagues who have chosen a SAS career path and remains committed to driving forward change within NHS and higher education organisations.
Dr Elizabeth Estabrook FRCP
Dr Elizabeth Estabrook is a UK trained doctor. After foundation year 2, Elizabeth moved to the USA where she did an internal medicine residency programme and subsequently joined the faculty to become an associate programme director for internal medicine. In 2020 she returned to the UK as a locum consultant. Elizabeth completed the CESR process to become a substantive consultant in 2022. Since then, she has become clinical lead and training programme director for single accreditation in general internal medicine.
Dr Ben Chadwick FRCP
Dr Ben Chadwick is a consultant in acute medicine at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and has a long-standing interest in medical education. At a postgraduate level he has been the training programme director for acute internal medicine in Wessex, and subsequently the chair of the Acute Internal Medicine Specialist Advisory Committee at the JRCPTB. Ben has been deputy registrar at the RCP since March 2025.
Graham Stow
Graham Stow is a senior educationalist at the Royal College of Physicians, where he designs and delivers professional education in leadership, quality improvement and medical education. With nearly 20 years’ experience across education, organisational development and project management, he specialises in helping people build confidence, capability and clarity throughout their careers. Graham is also a European mentoring and coaching council (EMCC) coach and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) practitioner, bringing a practical, people-focused approach to leadership, teams and professional development.
