Professor Steve Bain FRCP

Professor Steve Bain completed his undergraduate training at St John's College, Cambridge, and then was clinically trained at King's College Hospital, London. On qualifying in 1983, he went on to hold junior appointments in London, the East Midlands, and the West Midlands, UK. Professor Bain's research centred on the genetics of type 1 diabetes, and he was granted a medical research council lectureship. In 1993, he became a senior lecturer/honorary consultant physician at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, with promotion to reader in diabetic medicine in 1998. Professor Bain became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians UK in 1996 and was appointed to a newly created chair in medicine (Diabetes) in the University of Wales Swansea in 2005. His clinical interests include the genetics of diabetic nephropathy, new therapies for diabetes and the provision of diabetes services within the community. 

Dr Hazel Barker

Dr Hazel Barker completed a doctorate in clinical psychology at Cardiff University in 2013 and has since specialised in providing psychological care in chronic conditions and working across within areas of multiple sclerosis, cancer, hepatology, metabolic conditions and weight management services. Currently Dr Barker is jointly leading psychological care within the Cardiff and Vale specialist weight management service and has ten years of experience in this field in Wales.   

Professor Ruth Dobson FRCP

Professor Ruth Dobson is centre lead for the centre of preventive neurology at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health, QMUL (Queen Mary University of London). Her research has a focus on the roles of ethnicity, deprivation, gender and wider social determinants of health in MS (multiple sclerosis), and she is particularly interested in ensuring that all people with MS are represented in research. 
Professor Dobson is chair of the ABN advisory group for MS and neuroinflammation, she is a member of the NHS England neurology clinical reference group, and the UK representative on ECTRIMS Council. 
She was identified by the Royal College of Physicians as an emerging women leader in 2020. In 2023 she was awarded the individual MS brain health award for her work in pregnancy and MS. 

Professor John Wright

Professor John Wright is a doctor and epidemiologist with a background in hospital medicine and public health in the UK and in Africa. He established and leads the Bradford Institute for Health Research and Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research. He is the director of research for the city of Bradford and director of the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber applied research collaboration. He is visiting Professor in clinical epidemiology at the universities of York, Leeds and Bradford and has authored over 500 papers, three textbooks and been awarded over £150 million in research award funding.
In 2007 he set up the Born in Bradford (BiB) cohort study and in 2016 set up Born in Bradford’s Better Start. In 2019 he established ActEarly. John has worked to develop sustainable public health programmes in Africa for 30 years and has reported for the BBC on programmes covering Born in Bradford, Ebola and most recently The NHS Frontline podcast.

Dr Emma Litt

Dr Emma Litt is a consultant haematologist at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. She was appointed in 2014, having qualified with honours from University of Wales College of Medicine in 2004 and completed medical and haematology training in Wales. She leads the trust myeloma service and her stint as a clinical lecturer in palliative care prior to consultancy has led to an ongoing interest and involvement in medical education, including working as a lecturer for Keele Medical School. Dr Litt believes that haematology is an under-taught speciality that other clinicians are often wary of and aims to change that commonly held opinion.

Dr Adrian Raybould FRCP

Dr Adrian Raybould trained and qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1993 before moving to Wales in 1997 to undertake training on all Wales cardiology training programme and subsequently worked in many hospitals across South Wales including UHW, Morriston, Royal Gwent, POW and Royal Glamorgan.
Dr Raybould was appointed consultant cardiologist to Carmarthenshire NHS Trust in 2003 and worked there as well as on call for primary PCI in Morriston Hospital until COVID in 2020.
He has served as clinical lead for cardiology in Hywel Dda and have served as the RCP regional specialist representative for the past 5 years.

Dr Laurence Gray

Dr Laurence Gray is a consultant clinical pharmacologist and toxicologist working in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CAVUHB). He graduated in Wales, a member of the first cohort of graduate entry medicine at Swansea University.
Dr Gray is director of the National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) in Cardiff which supports healthcare staff to manage poisoned patients.

Dr Dev Datta FRCP

After completing medical school in Cardiff, Dr Dev Datta trained in cardiology and general medicine in Wales and Edinburgh. He was awarded a BHF junior research fellowship at Cardiff University and was subsequently awarded his MD. Having developed an interest in preventative cardiology and vascular medicine, he then completed training in medical biochemistry and metabolic medicine in Cardiff and was appointed as a consultant in 2011.

Dr Datta is clinical lead for the lipoprotein apheresis service in Cardiff and is medical lead for the Welsh Familial Hypercholesterolaemia cascade testing service. He runs a clinical nutrition service addressing medical complications of eating disorders and is clinical lead for the specialist weight management service in Cardiff. He is a trustee of HEART UK and is course director for the MSc in preventative cardiovascular medicine at University of South Wales.

Dr Gwenno Edwards

Dr Gwenno Edwards is a consultant in renal and acute medicine. Originally from North Wales, she was appointed as a consultant in Ysbyty Gwynedd in September 2024 after completing her training throughout Wales. She is the North Wales representative of the RCP new consultants’ committee and is the lead for the hospital medical induction and the “hospital front door” medical student module. She is a member of the society for acute medicine and is hoping to develop the acute medicine service in North West Wales.

Dr Dena Pitrola

Dr Dena Pitrola is a consultant acute care physician and nephrologist. She was appointed in July 2024 after completing her training throughout Wales, and is a Cardiff local. She is the South Wales representative of the RCP New Consultants’ committee and undergraduate specialty lead in acute medicine at University Hospital of Wales. She is a member of the UK Kidney Association Acute Kidney Injury Special Interest Group.
