Update in medicine – Newcastle 2024 delegate
RCP Update in medicine conferences are held across the UK and are delivered by the RCP regional team. These events are designed to provide high-quality education and allow attendees to stay abreast of clinical advancements in medicine, develop professional skills and network with colleagues.

Northern representatives from the RCP’s Resident Doctor Committee will be hosting an evening reception for resident doctors on Tuesday 28 April between 5.15-8pm approx.
Resident doctors from across the Northern region are encouraged to join us for a discussion around training and the opportunity to network with senior RCP representatives.
You will need register for this session which is free to attend and includes a hot buffet meal.

A small car park is located at the Hilton which operates on a first come, first served basis and uses automatic number plate recognition. A reduced parking rate will be available for conference delegates when your ticket is validated at reception.
Alternatively, the nearest car park is located at The Glasshouse (NE8 2BA), a flat rate fee is available if you pay on arrival.
The Tyne and Wear Metro park and ride is another option, the closest stations are Gateshead metro station (9-minute walk) and Newcastle Central station (12-minute walk).
Dr Shalabh Srivastava
Dr Srivastava qualified from Stanley Medical College, India and trained in nephrology at Barts and The London and then in Newcastle upon Tyne. He completed his PhD at Newcastle University and remains active in research. He runs the inherited kidney disease and kidney stone disease clinic for his NHS trust.
He also manages the pre-dialysis patient group. He is one of five interventional nephrologists at the Sunderland Department of Interventional Nephrology.
He started the UK’s only postgraduate course in interventional nephrology at Newcastle University and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
Dr Neil Archibald, FRCP
Dr Neil Archibald graduated from Oxford University in 1999 and undertook initial higher training as a geriatrician. He transferred to neurology in 2005, completing his specialist training in the north-east.
He commenced his consultant post in 2012, at The James Cook University Hospital. He specialises in movement disorders and works with a multidisciplinary team to deliver services across Teesside, Durham, Darlington and North Yorkshire.
Neil completed his PhD at Newcastle University in 2010 and has a particular interest in the array of visual symptoms encountered in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and PD dementia. He is an honorary psychiatrist with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, allowing him to deliver Parkinson’s psychosis interventions, including clozapine.
Dr Nigel Stout
Dr Nigel Stout qualified in medicine from Newcastle University in 1992 and studied for a PhD with Professor Rose Anne Kenny.
He was appointed as a consultant in general medicine and geriatrics at Sunderland in 2007 and specialises in falls, dizziness and syncope.
Professor Colin Rees, FRCP
Professor Colin Rees is president of the British Society of Gastroenterology.
He is professor of gastroenterology at Newcastle University. His research interests include endoscopy and colorectal cancer. He has led some of the world’s largest endoscopy trials, recruiting around 30,000 patients.
He leads a large colorectal cancer research platform (COLO-SPEED, www.colospeed.co.uk/).
Dr Dawn Ashley
Dr Dawn Ashley is a consultant acute physician at the University Hospital of North Tees, where she is clinical lead for acute oncology and acute medicine.
Dawn has a specialist interest in medical education, and is interim postgraduate dean for the north-east and north Cumbria.
Dr Nick Scriven, FRCP
Dr Nick Scriven has been a consultant in acute and general medicine at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust since 2001 after training in the Midlands in general and respiratory medicine.
Over the last years he has been training programme director for acute internal medicine (AIM), deputy chair of the Specialty Advisory Committee and has filled several roles in the Specialty Certificate Examination boards for AIM.
He has also been a long-term supporter of the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM), including a 9-year spell on the SAM Council culminating in being SAM president for 2 years.
As well as a full clinical job, he is currently an NHS England national adviser for AIM/same-day emergency care and is the joint national lead for AIM ST4 recruitment.
In the past 2 years he has added the role of medical examiner to his work.
He has had an interest in TB since registrar times and has been the lead TB clinician in Calderdale for 20 years.
Dr Dan Bailey, FRCP
Dr Dan Bailey (he/him) is a consultant geriatrician and educator at King’s College Hospital, where he champions inclusive, person-centred care and co-leads the perioperative medicine service for older people. He holds an MA in medical law and ethics from King’s College London.
Dan is co-chair of King’s and Queers, King’s College Hospital’s award-winning LGBTQ+ staff network. Under his leadership, the network has grown into a visible, values-driven platform for inclusion, intersectionality and joy.
He has led work on trans+ allyship, inclusive communications, staff mobilisation for Pride, and storytelling as a tool for culture change. He works closely with trust leadership to ensure that LGBTQ+ inclusion is embedded in policy, education and workforce wellbeing.
Beyond the network, Dan contributes to a specialist frailty clinic for older people living with HIV and is involved in projects exploring the care needs of older trans+ individuals. He has published on LGBTQ+ health in older adults and is working to broaden postgraduate medical education to better address LGBTQ+ health inequalities. He regularly speaks on queer ageing and dignity in care.
Dr Hilary Tedd
Dr Hilary Tedd is a respiratory physician with a specialist interest in assisted ventilation and the respiratory care of adults with a learning disability and neurodisability.
She is clinical lead for learning disabilities at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and co-authored the British Thoracic Society clinical statements on community-acquired pneumonia in people with a learning disability, and on aspiration pneumonia.
She is also training programme director for respiratory medicine for the region.
Dr John Williams, FRCP
Dr John Williams is an infectious diseases physician at The James Cook University Hospital. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1996 and trained in infectious diseases, gaining diplomas in tropical medicine and hygiene and in HIV medicine.
He has specialist interests in HIV, bone and joint infections and medical education.
Dr Shaza Bashir
Dr Shaza Bashir is a consultant interventional cardiologist at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT). She holds dual CCT accreditation in interventional cardiology and general internal medicine, and completed advanced interventional fellowship training in Canada, followed by a dedicated TAVI fellowship in Manchester.
Her specialist interests include valvular heart disease, structural heart intervention and advanced cardiac imaging, and she is actively involved in developing contemporary valve and rapid-access pathways.
Shaza is faculty for regional cardiology training programmes in the Northern region, including the cardiac CT course and the coronary angiography and vascular access course.
She also leads and contributes to simulation-based education for resident doctors in internal medicine training at STSFT and is a member of the Northern Women in Cardiology group. She is committed to advancing high-quality cardiovascular care and inspiring the next generation of physicians entering the specialty.
