M-PACT year 2 report: Developing sustainable capacity to tackle MDG6 in West Africa

Report summary

The project aims to support WACP member countries in tackling HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, with a focus on sustainability through building local capacity. This report reviews the progress in achieving aims and objectives during year 1.

I used the knowledge gained from the M-PACT training to educate surveillance officers on the epidemic investigation. I have also been involved in training of healthcare workers on TB/HIV coinfection.

Year 2 successfully built on the foundations established during the first year of M-PACT:

  • founding of three high-quality regional MDG6 training centres
  • delivery of two 'Doctors as educators' courses
  • staging of three clinical training courses.

Like year 1, the second year of this programme saw significant gains in participant learning and a continuation of positive feedback from course participants and faculty:

  • Seven clinical courses and one 'Doctors as educators' course were delivered, training 267 doctors.
  • An additional training centre was established in Abuja, Nigeria.
  • Preparations were completed for establishing the final training site in Sierra Leone next year.
