Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease that affects a large proportion of the population.
This guideline focuses on pharmacological aspects of treatment with the objective of decreasing subsequent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality due to stroke and coronary heart disease. Wherever possible, the recommendations are based on the clinical outcomes of mortality, stroke, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and new onset diabetes mellitus. It is aimed mainly at primary care professionals, including general practitioners, practice nurses and other primary health care professionals who have direct contact with patients.
This guideline was also published in Clinical Medicine, volume 7 issue 6.
