This leaflet highlights the often-overlooked impact of osteoporosis on mental wellbeing. Developed by the Fracture Liaison Service Database, it offers support for those who may feel anxious, isolated, or uncertain following a diagnosis. The leaflet provides practical advice, reassurance, and signposts to trusted mental health services and organisations. It aims to help patients understand they are not alone, and that looking after emotional wellbeing is just as important as managing bone health.
Background
Osteoporosis is often viewed primarily as a physical health condition, but its impact on mental wellbeing can be significant and is frequently overlooked. This leaflet has been created to help patients address any mental health challenges they may experience. We encourage healthcare professionals to offer this leaflet as part of routine care following diagnosis, especially during early conversations when patients may be feeling uncertain or overwhelmed.
By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of osteoporosis, we can offer more holistic, person-centred care that better supports patients on their journey.
