Stronger inside and out: mental wellbeing and broken bones from osteoporosis

Istock 1511144782

Background

Osteoporosis is often viewed primarily as a physical health condition, but its impact on mental wellbeing can be significant and is frequently overlooked.

This leaflet has been created to help patients address any mental health challenges they may experience. We encourage healthcare professionals to offer this leaflet as part of routine care following diagnosis, especially during early conversations when patients may be feeling uncertain or overwhelmed.

By addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of osteoporosis, we can offer more holistic, person-centred care that better supports patients on their journey.

How this resource can help

This resource has been created to help navigate any mental health and wellbeing challenges related to osteoporosis, and to highlight where support is available, this includes:

  • Support groups run by volunteers with lived experience of osteoporosis
  • Export advice
  • Understanding osteoporosis and treatment
  • Safe exercising
  • Nutrition and diet.

Acknowledgement

We would like to thank the FLS-DB task and finish group, RCP patient carer network, FLS-DB advisory group and the FFFAP patient carer panel for their contributions in making this leaflet.
