Following the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) report on air quality earlier this year, the RCP's special adviser on air quality, Professor Stephen Holgate, has commented on the publication of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) report Local action to mitigate the health impacts of cars.
Professor Holgate said:
This report from the FPH adds to the knowledge of the dangers from air pollution, and the urgency with which we must improve our air quality. The RCP/RCPCH [Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health] 2016 report Every breath we take showed the substantial impact of air pollution on many chronic long-term conditions across the lifecourse, including increases in strokes and heart attacks in susceptible individuals.
When our patients are exposed to such a clear and avoidable cause of death, illness and disability, it is our duty to speak out.
