Experts develop new decision support system for lung cancer care

Dr Ian Woolhouse, Associate Director, National Lung Cancer Audit welcomed the study:

MDTs are common now in managing cancer care. The benefit of the MDT approach is it allows clinicians to share best practice, expertise and experience when making decisions about treatment for care. However, this does mean that there is a large amount of information to review before coming to the decision, which can be time consuming. The LCA, that these experts have developed, can assist this decision making process by consolidating the data, guidance, recommendations and expertise into one platform. This has the potential to improve the speed and quality of the clinical decisions made about the treatment and care for lung cancer patients.

  • The LCA has been developed through the review of two existing decision support systems - clinical guideline rules and probabilistic recommendations.
  • The study is available online from the Royal Society website.
