A new clinical and evidence-based motor neurone disease (MND) guideline - commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), developed by the National Clinical Guideline Centre (NCGC) and hosted by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) - has been published today (24 February). The report sets out best practice for healthcare professionals in the assessment and management of MND.
The guideline presents recommendations on the following key areas:
- timeliness of diagnosis
- communicating with patients and their families about the diagnosis
- the prognosis and ongoing care
- symptom management, psychosocial support and identification of social care needs for patients and their carers
- managing the stopping of non-invasive ventilation (NICE clinical guideline 105 has been amalgamated with this guideline)
- preparing for the end of life.
The evidence review and full recommendations are available now at NICE.
