NICE inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) quality standard welcomed

He said:

The publication of the guidelines will help everyone involved in the care of patients with IBD know exactly what standards they should be meeting at various stages of the patient pathway. We particularly welcome the recommendations that support people managing their condition to improve their quality of life, and to improve their experience of services.

The recommendations mirror those of previous IBD national audit reports. As much of the available data to support the guidelines comes from the UK IBD national audit, it is vital this audit is recommissioned, otherwise we will not be able to measure the success of the new quality standard in years to come. The UK IBD audit has been a major factor in driving up standards of care over the past decade, but there is a long way to go, and we still need to measure how well we care for patients with IBD.
