The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) invites its fellows to nominate candidates for the 2018 RCP elections.
As Professor Margaret Johnson nears the end of her successful term, RCP fellows may nominate candidates for the role of academic vice president. Fellows may also submit nominations for members of RCP Council to serve between August 2018 and July 2021.
Academic vice president
The academic vice president is one of three vice presidents, who are senior officers of the RCP. They are responsible for leading the RCP’s Strategy, Communication and Policy Department and its activities. Nominated candidates must have at least 5 years' standing as an RCP fellow and will be expected to demonstrate interest and experience in academic medicine as well as research.
The elected candidate will shadow Professor Johnson and then take up office on 1 August 2018.
Once nominated, candidates will be invited to submit a CV along with details of their interests and experience, to assist Council in drawing up the ballot list. After considering nominations, Council will approve a list of candidates from those who have been nominated. The new academic vice president will be elected via a postal ballot that RCP fellows will be invited to vote in.
Members of Council
Council is the professional decision-making body of the RCP. Elected members are required to attend six Council meetings throughout the year and will also undertake additional supporting work.
Under the terms of bye-law 80, any fellow of the RCP may propose one or more fellows for election to Council. Any proposed nomination for Council must be supported by three fellows.
Anyone nominated must have agreed to stand for election and be aware that they are being nominated.
How to nominate
To nominate a candidate for the office of academic vice president or as a member of Council, fellows should complete the relevant nomination form.
Print copies of these forms are also included in the April issue of Commentary.
You will also need to send an email to Clive.Constable@rcplondon.ac.uk confirming both your name and the candidate's, using the appropriate subject line:

Nominations must be received by Monday 7 May 2018 in order to be considered. Voting will open in June when all fellows will be sent ballot papers and election material about the candidates.
