Omani health minister becomes RCP fellow

H.E. Dr Al Sa’eedi, who has previously held the position of Head of Medicine at the Royal Hospital in Muscat, has been closely involved with developing the relationship between the RCP and Oman. In 2009, in his previous role as Undersecretary of State for Health, he invited and hosted a delegation from the RCP which resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB) and the RCP. This details how the two organisations will work together, over a 5 year period, to facilitate opportunities for clinical training in the UK for Omani doctors.

In February 2010 H.E. Dr Al Sa’eedi gave his support to a joint advanced general medicine conference with the Ministry of Health of Oman, the Royal Hospital, the Sultan Qaboos University and the RCP in Muscat. The conference was hailed a success a helped to strengthen relations between the RCP and institutions in Oman. The conference, run in parallel to a two day RCP Doctors as Educators workshop in Muscat at the request of the OMSB. It is hoped that this highly successful workshop was the first step in closer educational collaboration between the RCP and the OMSB as well as other institutions in Oman.

Dr Al Sa’eedi trained in Glasgow, gaining his MBChB from the University there in 1989. He went on to take the MRCP UK in London in 1994.

Commenting, Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, president of the RCP, said:

I am delighted that H.E. Dr Al Sa’eedi is to become a Fellow of the RCP. He is a highly esteemed physician and has done much to encourage links between the RCP and Oman. Recent joint activities that were made possible by his hard work have been hugely successful and we hope they will mark only the start of long and fruitful collaborations between institutions in Oman and the RCP.

H.E. Dr Al Sa’eedi commented:

It is an honour and a privilege to become a fellow of the RCP. My Omani colleagues and I value the strong links with the college and hope with all sincerity that our relationship can go from strength to strength. It is my intention to continue to develop and nurture the bond that has grown between Oman and the UK medical professionals.
