The Patient and Carer Network (PCN) has today released its first annual impact report, developed to provide an overview of PCN involvement in the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP’s) work throughout 2017.
The report includes specific examples of the contributions made by PCN volunteers to key activities and projects, with highlights including:
- Support for the Future Hospital Programme, including through involvement in project governance and facilitating the engagement of local patient representatives.
- Contributions to a number of RCP audit programmes such as the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) and the Asthma Audit Development Project.
- Involvement in Our Future Health through workshop sessions and input on the development of the project’s scope and aims.
- Contributions to the work of the Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA) through board membership and focus-group sessions reviewing curricula and strategic documents.

The release of our Patient and Carers Network Impact Report 2017 is a significant milestone for the PCN and it marks a shift in our focus towards better understanding the impact of patient and public involvement at the RCP. It has played an important role in allowing the PCN to reflect on past achievements and to look forward with a refined focus and a clearer picture of the impact of well-planned patient and public involvement.
It is also an important exercise in holding ourselves to account, something we hope to do much more as we refine our objectives for 2018 and continue to evaluate our impact in order to facilitate effective volunteer engagement.
