RCP action on Dr Bawa-Garba case

The case of Dr Bawa-Garba has raised many issues relating to the responsibility of doctors to provide safe care and we have major concerns about the impact this judgement will have on many doctors, particularly trainees.

As I have said before, the case will influence the confidence doctors have in making and documenting honest reflections on their practice when things have gone wrong. The implication is that blame may be directed to doctors for doing their best in what are often very difficult circumstances. More than ever, trainees need helpful and specific guidance on what the implications of the case mean for their daily practice.

As a result, the RCP will be discussing the issue at its next Council meeting on 21 March, and will publish a position statement soon after. We will also be producing guidance for our trainees, and working with other medical organisations on this important issue

It is vital that we speak united as a profession to find the best solutions to support our fellows and members in ensuring patient safety at this difficult time.
