Professor Nick Sheron, RCP representative on EU alcohol policies, and Paul Belcher, RCP principal EU advisor, have taken part in the 2015 annual conference of the European Public Health Alliance in Brussels. Delegates included EU health ministers, representatives of the European Commission, WHO and OECD as well as other EPHA member organisations.
The conference discussed how health could be better mainstreamed across wider policy agendas at both national and EU levels under the title 'Towards a European Union for Health – From Health in All Policies to EU Governance for Health and Well-Being'.
Professor Sheron underlined the need to work more closely with finance and treasury ministries in particular, highlighting the example of alcohol policy where treasury decisions in the UK have had a 'great and almost immediate impact on health outcomes'.
