The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) commends the GMC on addressing a number of concerns shared by the RCP and other Royal colleges.
Dr Ian Starke, Director of Continuing Professional Development for the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK, said:
We commend the GMC for conducting a thorough and comprehensive consultation in advance of the introduction of revalidation in the UK, and welcome the fact that the analysis of responses addresses a number of key concerns raised by the Royal College of Physicians and other medical Royal colleges, and recognises the need for further testing. We appreciate the desirability of streamlining the process whilst at the same time acknowledging essential differences between specialties.
It is of crucial importance that detailed arrangements for non-clinical roles, quality assurance and support for Responsible officers are now established firmly, and we look forward to working in partnership with the GMC, RST and other central stakeholders on these issues.
The Colleges are well placed to establish standards and support implementation at local level, including quality assurance, and the RCP will support physicians throughout the revalidation process.
