Commenting on the NICE guideline on IV fluid therapy published on 10 December 2013, Dr. Anita Donley, RCP clinical vice-president said:
I welcome the publication of the NICE clinical guideline on intravenous fluid therapy for adults in hospital. Clear guidance on the use of IV fluid therapy in hospitals is needed, particularly in settings where errors are more likely, such as emergency departments, acute admission units and general medical and surgical wards.
This NICE guideline covers principles and protocols for safe prescription and monitoring of IV fluid and electrolyte therapy, and the training and educational requirements of all hospital staff involved in IV fluid management. The guideline emphasises that the safe prescribing and administration of IV fluid therapy is a complex task that requires careful evaluation of the individual patient’s needs.
Healthcare professionals and hospitals will find this guideline invaluable in ensuring that the system delivers appropriate training and regular assessment of the skills and capability of those prescribing and administering IV fluid therapy. Important research questions and the need for effective clinical governance, audit and review are identified.
