RCP responds to Health and Social Care Committee report on palliative care

Patients Holding Hands

Dr Hilary Williams, RCP clinical vice president, said:

‘Physicians see every day the impact of severe workforce shortages, particularly in specialist palliative care, and the consequences for young adults with complex physical, psychological and social needs at a crucial point in their lives.

‘Acute hospitals will always have a vital role in palliative care – providing 24/7 support when patients deteriorate unexpectedly, when rapid investigations are needed, or when a life changing diagnosis is first made. But relentless pressure on beds, staff time and suitable spaces means doctors too often feel unable to deliver the standard of compassionate, dignified care their patients deserve. It is heartbreaking for staff and families alike.

‘If the government is serious about improving palliative care, it must act urgently on workforce capacity across both specialist services and acute hospitals, and ensure the system recognises hospitals as places of safety and support, not failure. Without this, patients and clinicians will continue to be let down.’
