RCP welcomes latest stage in EU data protection discussions

This marks the latest stage in negotiations to revise EU rules in this area. The organisations have been concerned that changes to EU data law must not restrict or prevent vital research studies.

On 15 June, the EU Council of Ministers reached agreement on maintaining key exemptions and increasing safeguards for data subjects together with Member State flexibility. This is an important stage in the process as it marks the beginning of ‘trilogue' negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission to agree a final compromise text. Agreement is not expected until next year.
