Dr Kevin Stewart, Clinical director of the Clinical Effectiveness and Evaluation Unit (CEEU) at the Royal College of Physicians very much welcomes the latest data published by the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) today, he said:
The National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) is good news for patients with hip fracture, because monitoring whether patients are seen by a geriatric medicine specialist pre-operatively and if they receive surgery within 36 hours drives up standards as hospitals know their performance will be measured.
The supplement to the 2012 report published today really demonstrates the excellent practice and patient care that can be delivered when changes to NHS services are developed and led by clinicians. The leadership at a national level from dedicated and committed geriatricians and orthopaedic surgeons is exemplary and very welcome good news in light of recent events.
From the start of 2013, the NHFD has continued as part of the Falls and Fragility Fracture Audit Programme (FFFAP) at the RCP and we are looking forward to combining the fantastic work of the NHFD with the RCP Falls’ audits to provide a powerful programme in the future.
