The Royal College of Physicians welcomes the new proposed international priorities to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which will be put forward by The Lancet NCD Action Group and the NCD Alliance in The Lancet, 6 April 2011.
Sir Richard Thompson, President of the Royal College of Physicians, said:
Establishing a set of clear, cost-effective actions to reduce non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is helpful to any country trying to reduce the burden of death and illness from some of our biggest international health problems, which include heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease. The evidence-based recommendations focus on actions that can be taken immediately, can be implemented across a whole country, and will not require major increases in funding. We hope that these proposals will be taken up by the UN High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases in September 2011.
