Royal College of Physicians responds to Health Foundation report on government policies for tackling the leading risk factors driving ill health

In response to the report, Andrew Goddard, president of the Royal College of Physicians, said:

“Addressing the factors that cause ill-health in the first place should be a central focus for government at all levels. We have high rates of health inequality and preventable illness compared to other developed countries, and are one of only two OECD countries whose life expectancy has fallen since 2010.

“Good health plays a fundamental role in the prosperity of our nation – a healthy workforce has a direct effect on the health of our economy – as well as how much someone is able to enjoy their life. That’s why the Royal College of Physicians and over 200 members of the Inequalities in Health Alliance are calling for a national strategy.

“We need to shift the focus from public health initiatives delivered through the NHS and local authorities to the factors identified in this report, and others such as poor housing. The white paper on health disparities is a real opportunity to turn talk into action.”
