On the launch of the Academy of Medical Sciences’ SUSTAIN programme the president of the Royal College of Physicians Professor Jane Dacre said:
Currently, there are low numbers of women reaching leadership positions in the medical sciences. I am personally very keen to see this change as more balanced organisations are more likely to make truly innovative discoveries. At present only 15% of clinical academics at professorial level are women. As the majority of entrants into the medical profession are women - this issue needs to be urgently addressed.
Clinical research is vitally important to the continuation of health improvement within the NHS – ensuring women are at the forefront of such research in the years to come is essential.
The Academy’s new SUSTAIN programme is a powerful addition to making this aim happen.
