The government is proposing to expand undergraduate medical education by increasing the number of student places at medical schools in England by 1,500. The first 500 places will be allocated to medical schools, and available to students in September 2018.

Citing research published in the Future Healthcare journal, which stated that location is the single biggest factor in where foundation applicants apply(Curran and Baker Future Hospital Journal 2016 Vol 3, No 1: 17–20), the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) says the overriding priority for the introduction of the additional places must be on those areas of the country that have difficulty recruiting post graduate trainees and consultants.
