Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction. It can be generalised or systemic and is characterised by rapidly developing problems that affect the airway, breathing and/or circulation and are usually associated with skin and mucosal changes.
This guideline aims to raise awareness of this life-threatening condition and its first-line treatment and to emphasise the use of the ‘ABCDE’ (airway, breathing, circulation, disability and exposure) approach to recognising and treating anaphylaxis. It is aimed particularly at healthcare professionals who assess patients acutely, including paramedics and doctors and nurses in the accident and emergency department and in general practice.
This guideline was also published in Clinical Medicine, volume 9 issue 2.
