The Future Hospital Programme (FHP) continues to implement the recommendations from the Future Hospital Commission.
Ongoing projects
The involvement of patients and carers is at the heart of the Future Hospital vision and each project incorporates their voice and expectations for their care.
Future Hospital development sites
As part of its collaborations with eight selected development sites, the FHP is helping teams made up from multidisciplinary groups of clinical staff, social care workers, and patient and carer representatives realise their ambitions for service improvement.
Phase 1
In October 2015, the first four development sites were selected:
- Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
- Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust
- East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust
- Worthing Hospital.
The Phase 1 sites aim to improve the care of frail and elderly people.
Phase 2
In January 2016, the second phase of sites were selected:
- North West Surrey
- North West Paediatric Allergy Network
- Central and South Manchester
- Sandwell and Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Phase 2 sites are focused on providing person-centred care across integrated healthcare services.
The chief registrar pilot
The FHP launched the pilot of the role of chief registrar in April 2016. The scheme aims to determine the skills, time and training needed to support the new position of chief registrar in busy acute hospitals.
Working with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) and the RCP Education department, a training programme is being delivered to chief registrars, with a focus on quality improvement and development of management and leadership skills.
The pilot will support and formally evaluate the implications of the role on trainees’ professional development, patient experience and outcomes, and organisational outcomes.
Oxfordshire integrated care project
Building on the work led by Dr Rustam Rae to introduce integrated diabetes care in Derby, the FHP is supporting a team in Oxfordshire in developing a combined implementation, research and evaluation project to introduce integrated diabetes care locally.
Together with the developing business case for the clinical commissioning group (CCG), the team is evaluating existing models of integration and developing original research (particularly around cost-effectiveness) to inform their approach. The aim is that this insight will sustain their delivery model and improve outcomes. The team is reviewing its approach in real-time and will be providing resources to inform others of the steps towards delivering integrated care through the Future Hospital Partners Network.
A network of sharing and learning
The Future Hospital Partners Network is a community of interested parties that have developed around the Future Hospital model. The insights and learning from the FHP will be shared through the Partners Network. We will also be bringing the Partners Network members together to share their experiences and exchange knowledge in order to support widespread adoption of Future Hospital recommendations and principles.

Tell us your story
The FHP is showcasing examples of where best and innovative practice to improve patient care is taking place. We are doing this by asking people to share their stories, which are featured on the RCP website as exemplars of Future Hospital principles and recommendations in action.
