Committee on Ethical Issues in Medicine: vacancy for SAS doctor

The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is seeking an SAS doctor to join the Committee on Ethical Issues in Medicine (CEIM) as a representative of the RCP for a term of four years.

Debate over ethical issues arising in medical practice is important to the medical community, with issues discussed by the CEIM over the past few years including:

  • assisted dying
  • organ donation
  • reproductive technologies
  • resource allocation
  • professional roles
  • end-of-life concerns
  • gender identity health
  • inequalities.

The CEIM is made up of fellows, college officers and external members with expertise in ethics, and medical ethics. We are now looking for an SAS doctor to join a group chaired by Dr Alexis Paton, Director of the Centre for Health and Society and Lecturer in Social Epidemiology and the Sociology of Health at Aston University. The group meets formally twice a year.

How to apply

If you are interested in joining, please send your CV and a brief outline of the experience you could bring, to the chair, via the committee manager alison.shore@rcp.ac.uk by midnight Sunday 10 August 2025. Applications will then be considered by the RCP’s Nominations Committee at their next meeting in September.

A formal qualification in medical ethics would be an advantage but is not essential: a willingness to read around the issues and the ability to contribute to discussions are more important.

The Royal College of Physicians welcomes and actively seeks to recruit people to its activities regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation. The RCP aims to reflect the diversity of its members in all its committee, senior roles and staff in general. The diversity of the specialty will be considered in determining appointments.
