RCP responds to hospital discharge figures

The Royal College of Physicians has responded to NHS England's publication of Urgent and Emergency Care Daily Situation Reports which include hospital discharge figures.

Responding to the data, Andrew Goddard, the president of the Royal College of Physicians, said:

"There is a desperate need for more community beds, especially in the care sector. Without these the NHS will remain log-jammed and patient care will be compromised. Today’s figures show that 12% of occupied general and acute beds in England are being used by someone who is well enough to be discharged. The NHS, local government and social care must work together to improve the situation.

"The additional funding promised to the NHS to free up hospital beds is currently unusable, so it makes sense to move it to support social care in the short term. In the long term, workforce shortages remain the key limiting factor for both health and social care."
